MAKING THE MAP OF EL BERROCAL
(By Janne Weckman, mapper of Middle distance event)
When first arrived there and saw the terrain from the car I knew I would
have to do mapping never done before. Not because of the lack of experience
but because the terrain is such unique.
From the start it was clear I could not put every boulder, cliff or
other small detail on the map but somehow have to find the right criteria
for generalizing.
After deciding suitable style it was still maybe the most difficult
and demanding mapping I had ever done.
Not only "Jaras" (plant that makes the map a bit green) were
the only problem but also that objects look quite different from down
than from up above.
After hard fight with "Jaras" I came up with a map to which
I am very satisfied.
I think I succeeded on the idea of making "finn map", meaning
a bit generalized, easy to read and with objects most visible in the
terrain also most readable on the map.
For runners I could anyway say that you still don´t want to read
everything because then you have to walk. Either you don´t want
to go always straight because then you have to walk too.
